Vasile Ursu has collected the necessary number of signatures in his favour, but he will submit the documents needed for registration as candidate for the mayor-general post only after he establishes how compatible his current office is with the status of electoral competitor.
Under recent provisions of Article 13, Paragraph 3 of the Election Code, public functionaries stop holding their offices once they are registered as electoral contestants. The deputy mayor (according to Article 39 of the law on local public administration, V.Ursu is the deputy mayor who fulfils the duties of ad-interim mayor-general) falls under incidence of status of public functionary on basis of Article 29 and Annex 3 to the public service law.
